Is Technical School a Worthwhile Expense?

Going to a vocational or a technical school can be a very expensive process.  While the expenses may be tax deductible to a point, you might still be talking about $50,000 or more.  And while this is still less than going into a four year degree program, it is still more money than most people have got socked away.  Of course, there is the sizable advantage that technical schools tend to be for very lucrative careers that may end up accepting you right out of school.  So there are plenty of variables that you need to consider, when you are thinking about going to a vocational school and pursuing that subject matter as your career path of choice.  The decision is naturally up to you as to whether or not learning a trade is going to be worth the expense and time you spend there.  The following are a few expansions of what you need to consider.

On the average, a person who only gets a high school diploma has the chance to make roughly $800,000 over the course of their career.  Meanwhile, a person who learns a lucrative trade (such as automotive repair or HVAC service or installation) can, after an investment of roughly four years (including their apprenticeship) and around $50,000, can end up making over $3 million over the course of a forty year career.  Consider than a good auto mechanic can rack up more than $70,000 in a year, and the time spent in tech school might begin to sound well spent.

But of course, a lot of people have gone to technical school, almost finished, and never quite gotten to the good parts of the deal.  If you want to spend a lot of money and still end up making a little bit above minimum wage, you might as well just take a nice vacation every so often and blow some dough at the casino.  At least that’d be fun.
